ESP is an interdisciplinary research centre for European Latin American / Brazilian relations.  Staff are drawn from researchers from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and associated members from other institutions.  The main areas of interest are:

·         European foreign relations with Latin America and especially Brazil;

·         Economic relations between Europe and Brazil;

·         Scientific and technological policies from Europe and Brazil: development and co-operation;

·         Comparative studies on social public policies.

The programme has three main areas of activities:

·         Research and Training;

·         Documentation Centre (Centro de Documentação Européia - CDE); &

·         Scientific Exchange and Information.

In addition to research, the main area of activity includes courses and seminars.  The Documentation Centre (CDE) provides a database for research activities and is open to the public.  The database contains details about all the EU members states – including newspaper articles published in Brazil about Irish affairs, especially in the economic and political fields.  The CDE is recognised by the European Commission as a complete documentation centre for the European Union (EU) and as such forms part of a network of EU documentation centres worldwide.  The aim of the scientific exchange and information part of the programme is to increment cultural co-operation between Brazil and Europe and to increase the flow of researchers and information.
