A number of
original documents relating to Irish immigration from the 17th
century can still be found in various Brazilian
archives, especially those in Rio. Details follow.
Many of the documents are in a poor state of preservation mainly due
to Rio’s high levels of humidity, and the fact that
they were usually written on paper that had a high level of acidity (pH)
that made the paper brittle and turned it brown over
time. Moreover, the type of ink used at
the time had a high lead
(Pb) content, which oxidized over time, so where the
author wrote the letters a, e and o, for example, a number of holes
have since appeared in the parchment papers.
27.04.98 – P. O´Neill donated
a professional scanner to the National Archives (NA) of Brazil in Rio to mark
its 160th
anniversary. Funds were raised at two St. Patrick´s Day
celebrations in Rio and São Paulo that year with a view to
restoring NA documents
related to Irish immigration in 1825.
Six month later 300 documents from the 1825-1829
period were restored and
microfilmed. The film was then donated to the National
Archives of Ireland (Dublin) where
it can be consulted today
(Index No. MFA 62).
