Figures on early immigration -
1827
On 25
June 1827 the Connaught Journal reported on an article published in the Liverpool
Chronicle entitled “The Brazilian
Army –
The Irish” which noted that “We have heard from good
authority, that the Emperor of Brazil is desirous of recruiting
his
armies with the natives of Ireland and that many vessels have already been
taken up at this port (Liverpool) to proceed
to ports
in Ireland, and to carry settlers thence to Rio.”
On 9
January 1828 the daily newspaper Jornal do Commercio of Rio noted that
according to details published by the UK
newspaper
the Morning Chronical about the progress of Irish immigration to Brazil,
the number of immigrants who sailed
from
Cork to Brazil (Rio, Espirito Santo and São Paulo) in ten ships in 1827
totalled 3,169 passengers, comprising 2,450
men, 335
women, 123 young men & women and 230 children. 31 paid their own way.
The rest were army recruits,
however,
many of them subsequently returned to Ireland and 101 families moved to Bahia.
